Physics (Bachelor/Master)

This page is intended to collate information so that questions that arise during your studies can be answered here. So, the site would depend on you asking us questions so that we know which problems need to be solved. So far, we have mainly collected questions about exams, but other questions about studying can also be answered here. So if you have a question, please e-mailed.lk-kisyhpsf(ta)DAS GEHÖRT HIER NICHT HIN UND SOLLTE ENTFERNT WERDEN UND RÜCKWÄRTS IST DAS ANDERE AUCH NOCHretsam-rolehcab">bachelor-master(at)fsphysik-kl.de.

Where can I find the examination regulations and the module handbook?

The examination regulations (PO) can be found on the RPTU's central page for examination regulations, and the Department of Physics also offers a recording of the Examination Office's information event on this topic. It is also highly recommended that you familiarize yourself with your module handbook (MHB). The PO regulates all the essential legal principles of the degree program and is the right place to go if you have questions about deadlines, exceptional cases, etc. The MHB is a much-used reference work in practice, in which you will find a list of all courses to be attended, the respective examinations/credits to be completed, and further information on studying.

What is the difference between "Prüfungen" (examinations) and "Studienleistungen" (Study achievement)?

Examinations are those achievements that are later included in your final grade according to the weighting given in the PO/MHB. They can only be repeated twice. They are partly oral (G2, G3, E1, M1/2/3, ...) and partly written (G1, possibly WPfl, ...). The form is usually determined in the MHB; in case of doubt, the course lecturer has the final say. All examinations must be registered with the Examinations Office (PA) up to 2 weeks before the examination date. The exact procedure depends on the course and can be requested from the PA, but experience has shown that it is highly recommended to consult also the study management team or us if you have questions. In particular, the general examination registration period of the university only applies to physicists (exceptions are possible for WPfl!), which often needs clarification.

Study achievements, on the other hand, are the achievements that must be completed as ungraded work (internships, soft skills, E2, E3, ...) or are preliminary work for participation in examinations (such as exercises and/or "Scheinklausuren" for Ex1 and MGDP for G1, Ex2 and TGdkP for G2, ...). Their form is very flexible and can be determined by the lecturer. As preliminary work, they often take the form of successful participation in the accompanying exercises and possibly a written examination; in the case of courses that are only submitted as a certificate, there are short discussions, short written examinations, lectures, exercises, homework, .... in addition to the form of practicals at the end of the course. Certificates do not generally expire, but you should ask lecturers whether they recognize "Scheinklausuren" taken from other lecturers. It is optional to register in the PA - however, lecturers are usually happy if they have numbers for planning purposes, so please register with them in advance.

What is the Bachelor's/Master's degree compared to the traditional diploma?

The Bachelor's degree program in Physics with a following Master's degree was introduced in Kaiserslautern in the winter semester 2011/2012. On the other hand, the Diplom Physics programhas been discontinued; new enrolments were last possible in the winter semester 2023/2024. In terms of content, the two types of programs are largely the same; the main difference between the Diploma and the Bachelor's/Master's programs is the structure of the individual exams. Upon completing the program, a Master's degree is equivalent to a Diplom degree.
